[Research] Development and improve the performance of light source

Bending the electrons which are accelerated to high energy, brilliant light called synchrotron radiation from infrared to hard x-ray is generated. Using the radiation, it is possible to measure a variety of properties such as electronic state and arrangement of atoms and molecules that make up the material. It is involved in the research and development of the light source for generating the radiation.

Purpose and Vision
Two light sources are operating at KEK. One is PF ring which accumulate the electrons of 2.5 GeV, and the other is PF-AR which accumulate the electrons of 6.5 GeV. Various experiments have been carried out utilizing the characteristics of the light sources, respectively. In order to realize the light with an ultra-high brilliance and very short pulse which cannot reach by the existing light sources, KEK is also going to carry out R & D of energy recovery linac of (ERL).

Summary
Photon Factory has played a large role in the development of the synchrotron radiation science for more than 30 years since 1982. The PF ring has accumulated electrons with 2.5 GeV. The PF-AR has accumulated electrons with 6.5 GeV to produce photons with much higher energy since 1987. Synchrotron radiation, which is generated by bending the electrons with such a high energy, has become an indispensable tool in a variety of research areas from such as the polarization characteristics and high brightness. It is operated as a joint-use facility laboratory, such as industry. In addition, KEK has been developed the insertion devices that generates much higher brilliant synchrotron radiation by placing a permanent magnet column inside a vacuum chamber. Top-up operation has also been achieved in recent years to realize stable experiments, and other efforts to further improve performance have been providing. In parallel, the research and development of energy recovery linac (ERL) to achieve high brilliant and short pulse with 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to the existing light source.
